The
average craps table is about the size of a billiards table and is designed
to accommodate between twelve and twenty-four players. There are two identical
side areas separated by a center area where the proposition bets are placed.
Players at each end of the table can place the same kind of bets and have
their wins and losses handled by a dealer close to them.

A
rail is located in front of the players divided into the same number of
sections, as there are players to keep the bettors chips in. The layouts
two identical sides consists of several betting possibilities; Pass and
Don’t Pass Line bets, Come and Don’t Come areas, Field bets, Big 6 and
8 bets and areas to make Place bets on the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10.
Pass
Line
The
Pass Line takes up a large portion of the layout and swings around the
curvature of the table to accommodate all the players. Most players bet
on the Pass Line, which explains the need for such a large betting area.
The players betting on the Pass Line are wagering that the dice will pass,
or that a point will be repeated before a seven-out occurs.
Don't
Pass Line
The
Don’t Pass Line takes up considerably less space than the Pass Line and
contains an additional box which states, barring the 12. This is done to
prevent the Don’t Pass player from gaining an advantage over the casino.
When a twelve is thrown during a come-out roll, the Don’t Pass player has
a push or a tie with the casino.
Come
Box
The
come box is less frequently used than the Pass and Don’t Pass Lines, mostly
because the average player doesn’t know how to use it. The come bet is
the same as the Pass Line wager, except that it can only be placed after
a come-out roll. If a seven or eleven is thrown while a player has a bet
in the come box, the player wins. If a two, three or twelve is thrown,
the player loses. If a point is thrown the come bet goes on the number
and the player wins if the number is repeated before a seven is rolled,
but loses if a seven comes first.
Don't
Come Box
The
Don’t Come box is a small area, since it is very seldom used by the average
player and also, like the Don’t Pass Line, bars the twelve. Like the Come
bets the Don’t Come wagers can be made anytime after a come-out roll. If
a two or a three is thrown while the player has a bet in the Don’t Come
box, the player automatically wins. However, if a seven or eleven is thrown
the player automatically loses. If a point is thrown, the bet goes behind
the number on the layout and wins if a seven is thrown before that point,
but loses if that point repeats before a seven-out.
Field
Bet
The
Field area is large and for a good reason since the casino has a 5.5 percent
advantage on all bets placed there. Field bets are won or lost on one roll
of the dice. If a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 is thrown, the players with
chips in this area win while a 5, 6, 7 or 8 causes these players to lose.
Big
6 & Big 8
These
areas are given considerable space on the craps table layout, again for
a good reason. The casino has a 9.09 percent advantage on bets in this
area. These bets can be placed at any time and win if a six or an eight
is thrown before a seven. The drawback to these bets is that they pay only
even money. A player is better off making a place bet on the six or eight
instead, which has a payoff of 7 to 6.
Place
Bets
Place
bets are by far the most popular types of bets at the craps table. Place
bets are working only after the come-out roll and can be placed on the
4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. Place bets win if the number they are placed on is
thrown before a seven-out occurs.
The
payoffs for these place bets are shown below.

Proposition
Bets
There
are several different types of proposition bets, which can be made at any
time by a player. A list of these types of bets is as follows:
-
Any 7
- A one-roll bet that only wins if a seven is thrown.
-
Any Craps
- A one-roll bet that only wins if a 2, 3 or 12 is thrown.
-
2 or
12 - A one-roll bet that only wins if a 2 or 12 is thrown.
-
3 or
11 - A one-roll bet that only wins if a 3 or 11 is thrown.
-
Horn
Bet - A one-roll bet that acts as four bets at once. If a 2, 3, 11 or 12
is thrown the player wins and is paid off according to the usual odds for
that number. The casino keeps the other three units as losing chips.
-
Hardways
- Unlike the other proposition bets the hardways are not one roll bets.
A player betting on a hardway number wins if that number is rolled hard
(2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5) before it is rolled easy or before a seven.
